Roundabout Safety Fears for Sunshine West

Large vehicles will continue to travel through a small shopping strip and roundabout in Sunshine West, Australia, despite a truck tearing through and damaging the footpath and garden.

Early last month the truck went through the Glengala Rd roundabout, near the corner of Gregory and Oldfield streets, and destroyed the paving and bricks.

Sacked Brimbank councillor Sam David, who also plans to stand for re-election later this year, said he had contacted the council twice on the matter, with shopkeepers concerned about safety on the street.

A 71-year-old pedestrian died after she was hit by a car at the same intersection in August last year.

“The roundabout is right in the mouth of the shopping centre,” Mr David said.

“I understand budgets but it needs to be looked at and fixed; people are concerned for their safety.”

Council infrastructure and environment general manager Paul Younis said roundabouts in the vicinity of shopping precincts were inspected fortnightly.

“BCC Road Services were made aware of the issue at the Glengala Rd roundabout in early December 2011 and are currently in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out the repair works,” he said.

“Given the function of Glengala Rd, and that it carries larger vehicles that service the shops and businesses in the area, it would not be possible nor practicable to ban such vehicles from using the road,” Mr Younis said.
