AI Chatbots in Vehicles: The Risks Drivers Should Know

Voice assist in vehicles has historically been a mixed bag. Older systems demanded near-robotic diction just to be understood, often misfired on simple commands, and had a habit of returning an action that wasn't quite what you asked for: sometimes closing the wrong app, calling the wrong contact, or routing you somewhere you didn't mean to go. 

Now automakers are turning to generative AI as the fix. From Tesla's Grok to ChatGPT in Apple CarPlay, and Google Gemini acting as driving copilots, conversational AI is standardizing across leading car brands and transforming the hands-free operating experience. But while these chatbots may seem like a helpful companion on the road, like all new vehicle assistance tech, drivers should keep in mind the trade-offs riding along with that convenience.

A Familiar Risk with A New Voice 

Driver distraction is one of the biggest threats on the road and while most of us tend to think of that as holding a cell phone, the problem has never just been about hands off the wheel. The bigger risk comes from cognitive distraction, the mental drift that happens when a driver's brain is occupied by something other than the task of driving. Conversation especially, whether with a passenger or someone on the line, takes real cognitive effort, managing tasks like processing new information, reading tone, pulling from memory, and forming a response. That mental load doesn't disappear just because a driver's hands stay on the wheel, and their eyes stay on the road.

Conversational AI repeats this exact risk, where instead of a single command like "call home," a driver might now ask a multi part question or request, wait for a response, and follow up, effectively holding a full conversation with their dashboard. Drivers can now also delve into more nuanced and personal topics with their in-vehicle assistant, which in turn demands even more cognitive resources.

Each back-and-forth exchange is another moment of attention diverted from the road, but one easier to overlook because it feels like a helpful assist rather than an obvious distraction. 

The Risk of Overreliance  

Automakers are also increasingly building deeper AI assistants into their vehicles, ones able to tap into a car’s diagnostic and operating systems, pull from a model specific knowledge base, and read telemetric data to answer questions, flag issues, or guide drivers based on their habits. At scale, this trend could lead to a habit of drivers leaning on AI for things they should really know themselves.  

Take the "navigation atrophy" that’s occurred since the rise of GPS, where drivers who over rely on turn-by-turn directions have weaker mental maps of their surroundings and struggle more without a device. With more intuitive dashboards, area familiarity or basic maintenance awareness — like tire pressure, fluid levels, or what a dashboard warning light actually means — could potentially shift from baseline driver competencies to questions a driver simply asks their car instead. This is even more of a risk as generative AI can occasionally provide inaccurate or misleading information. 

Behind the Wheel, You're in Charge 

In-vehicle AI may seem like the expert, but remember you’re the one in the driver’s seat, and it’s up to you to make the safe call while driving. That means using your judgment and drawing on practical driver knowledge, not just quick answers. It’s knowing your route, your vehicle’s needs, and safe practices like when and how to engage with hands-free features like text and AI chat. At the end of the day, these driving fundamentals are still the best companions on the road.
